Support Your Local Brewery Adelaide
When was the last time you visited one of the local breweries? There are a few to chose from located in and around our fair city. Whilst they don’t all have their own venues there are some that do and they serve some very good beer. The only way to get more good beer out to the public is to support the people that make and serve it. Who can you have more of an impact on than the small local breweries.
East of the city or in the Hills then go for a visit to the Lobethal Bierhaus. On top of some amazing beer, try the double hopped IPA, they have their own restaurant with really great food. If you are a brewing geek the hardware is even on display for you to swoon over while enjoying a pint. In the central or West of the city then head down to Brewboys. Thursday through Sunday you will find Simon down there serving his beer and quite often a band playing. Brewboys also have a ton of special events through the year and there is certain to be one that appeals to you. If you are down South then why not visit McLaren Vale Beer Company or Goodiesons, both located in McLaren Vale. You can even go a little further down to the beach and stop in for an Ale overlooking the now flowing Murray River at Steam Exchange. If you are in the North of the city head out to the Barossa on the weekend and have a taste at Barossa Brewing Company in Grenock.
All this is right on your door step Adelaide. Take advantage of it this weekend and have some great craft beer. Get There!
Beer Geek Brunch on tap at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
We have been waiting for this one for a while but it is happening tomorrow. The tweet came out this morning that Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch is going on tap at The Wheaty tomorrow, 27 March, from 1400. This is short notice and they don’t normally put on beers like this on a Sunday afternoon but this is one that is really worth going out of your way for. I have had this beer from a bottle a few times and it is as good as you have heard it is. They call it a coffee Imperial oatmeal stout. The coffe they use is from coffee beans eaten digested and returned as droppings by a civet. This may sound unappealing but it really is one of the best beers you are going to try.
There is only one keg of this beer in Australia and it’s at The Wheaty. It will start pouring at 1400 and I doubt it will make it through the day. Every self respecting beer geek in Adelaide will be there getting as much of it as they can before the keg runs dry. You really should Get There!
The Big Shed
So my first article about Big Shed is up at Brews news. Head on over and check it out. Have a good look around the site while you are there. Lots of good in depth articles and industry news to read.
Moo Brew Masterclass at The Wheaty Wheatsheaf Hotel
So this is a last minute post but if you aren’t doing anything tonight, Tuesday March 22, you should get to The Wheaty. A special event is being hosted by Owen and John from Moo Brew. They are running a master class which will involve tastings of their beers and talks about them. There will be a question and answer session so punters will get a chance to grill the brewers. It is $20 a head and if past events are anything to go by it will be good value for that. So if you have the time get down there. Should still be the odd ticket left but don’t wait as it will likely sell out.
I just got back from Tasmania and had the chance to visit a few good bars and restaurants down there. It was hop harvest season while I was there so got to see the harvest happening in Bushy Park too. Seeing all those hops was amazing. Made me thirsty. Will put together a bit of a trip report soon.
Doctors Orders Brewing at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
This is a new release I am very excited about. You probably haven’t heard of Doctors Orders Brewing before unless you are from the Homebrewing scene or a Sydney beer geek. Doctors Orders is a small operation from Sydney that produces a few seasonal releases each year. The brainchild of owner/operator/brewer Darren ‘Doc’ Robinson, Doctors Orders got it’s start with commercial collaboration brews with a number of breweries. Off that base of contacts and experience Doctors Orders was born. I have had a few of Docs beers in the past and every one has been sensational.
The latest release is Zephyr. In Docs own words Zephyr is Double White Ale morphing the Belgian Witbier style with Australian botanicals to produce a full strength (5.7%) nourishing yet refreshing summer beer. Sounds great to me. An odd sounding choice but Doc isn’t really about doing standard beers. Have a look at his site for past releases and you will see what he is all about.
So get to The Wheaty this Friday from 1700 and support a great small brewery and a great pub. Get There!
Shameless Self Promotion
I don’t know if I have mentioned this on here before but I am also doing some writing for another beer site. I generally cover the local Adelaide breweries and events, the odd trip report and some opinion pieces. The site is Brews News and even before I wrote for them I used it as a source of info on beer stuff in Australia. The site has been making a real push to add a bunch of writers who are passionate about beer and the Australian beer scene. You should check the site out.
To get completely shameless you can find the articles I have written for Brews News here. It has been a great experience writing for the site and much thanks goes to the editor Matt Kirkegaard. I’m hoping to ramp it up and write some more articles including a series about the new start up brewery Big Shed Beer.
Make sure you check out the site and see what is going on in the Australian beer scene. There are some great writers on the site and me so make sure you give it a good read and add it as one of your regular sources.
