Yeastie Boys at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
We have had it in bottle for a while and it has been one of my personal favourites. Now we are getting it on tap. Yep it’s the very awesome Pot Kettle Black from Yeastie Boys on tap from the Friday at The Wheaty. It should be going on about 1700 this Friday and I recommend that you don’t miss it. If the bottled product is anything to go by it is going to be amazing from the tap. Also coming up over then next month on tap there are plenty more interesting beers. From Yeastie Boys the Hu-da-wa, and 100% peat malt Rex Attitude will be making appearances.
Over the month the Yeastie Boys will be joined by some other breweries from across the Tasman. 8Wired and Tuatara will be returning to the taps with their Tall Poppy and APA respectively. For something a little closer to home a pallet of kegs is on it’s way from Bridge Road Brewers.
A bunch of new bottles are coming too. The most exciting of which is the first batch of Sierra Nevada beers to be legitimately imported into the country. All the SN beers imported to this country in the past have been grey imports and may not have been treated as they should be. These should be fresh and tasting great. Also coming is beers from Invercargill, Renaissance and Murray’s so there is plenty to look forward to.
Do yourself a favour and get down to the Wheaty.
Crown & Sceptre
Adelaide now has a new option for good craft beer. The Crown and Sceptre has hooked up with some of Australia’s best breweries and has a range of great beers available. They have pulled out a lot of stops and really jumped into it too. They have a great range of beer from the likes of Murray’s, Bridge Road Brewers, Stone & Wood and 8Wired from NZ. They aren’t dipping their toe when it comes to breweries or styles. On a recent visit I had an Icon 2IPA from Murray’s, a Chestnut Pilsener from Bridge Road Brewers and an Organic Ale from Mike’s. That is an amazing line up for a bar just getting into good beer. Have a look at the beer list on their web site for the full line up. I’m certain you will be impressed.
You really should go for the beer but there are other reasons to visit too. I visited for lunch recently and the food was great. They have specials going all week so if you are working in the city it’s a great spot for lunch and maybe a beer or two at lunchtime. Then you can head back down for after work drinks and it will still take you many visits to work through that beer list. On top of the food there is regular live music and DJs, check the gigs page for details. The Sceptre is just a cool venue. For those of you that live and or work in the city it’s a great spot and they are making a real commitment to good beer which is a rare thing within the cbd and the whole of Adelaide for that matter. Get down there and have a beer.
If they do get the support from beer drinkers we may even get them to add a tap or two of good beer. When you go in pick up a good beer and ask when the taps are coming. They are doing a great job but more people will give great beer a try if they know it is there. Get There!

Just watch and listen. Created for Good Beer Week. It’s awesome.
Drink a Local at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
It’s that time of the month again. Time for two new locals to go on tap at The Wheaty. This month we have BrewBoys and Steam Exchange supplying us with their wares. Kick off is 1800 as usual at The Wheaty on Wednesday 4 May.
Brewboys bring us an old favourite this month in the Maiden Ale. A great drinkable beer that has a great balance and is just at home on a winter evening as it is at your bbq on summer after noon. They say:
Maiden Ale (4.9% ABV) is a stylish Amber Ale, with a well rounded full body and intensely inviting citrus and floral hop aromas, robust caramel malt back palate, well balanced with lingering bitterness. Blah blah blah… just drink it.”
Steam Exchange brings us their Southerly Buster. I’m not certain if this one has made it on tap at The Wheaty before. I have had it on a number of occasions at the brewery and it should fit right in on the increasingly cool Autumn evenings. Get yourself a pint and pull up infront of the fire. They say:
Southerly Buster Dark Ale (5.5% ABV) is a classic British style winter warmer for those cold blustery nights! This rich dark ale displays strong malt character, with caramel-roast nuances and Christmas pudding overtones. Complex and flavoursome, the Southerly Buster is an ale to be savoured…
There should be no excuse to miss this month as the Saison DuMoo release is the same night and starts an hour before hand. Just don’t book any early meetings or do something silly like me and fly out at 0600 the following morning. Get down , enjoy the night, talk to the brewers and support your local breweries. Get There!
Saison DuMoo at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
This is the first beer to come out under the MONA label. These are the more experimental beers from Moo that are being brewed at the old Moorilla Estate brewery. Moo recently commissioned a new production facility. Their blurb on it is:
Brewed by the Moo Brew team in the Mona brewery, Saison DuMoo (5.5% ABV) is a unique Tasmanian interpretation of the Belgian Farmhouse style; medium bodied and pale orange in appearance, with a complex flavor profile developed by the yeast esters balanced with spicy earthiness and a dry, tart and peppery finish.
“Traditional floor malted Bohemian Pilsner malt from Germany, representing the oldest form of malted barley, provides the base malt of this beer. The use of raw spelt seeks to follow the Belgian farmhouse tradition of including raw grains in the grist. The origin of the yeast strain is reputed to be a small garage brewery in Blaugies, Belgium, focused on the revival of the Saisons brewed previously in the region. Hops from Bushy Park (EKG) provide us with a tangible link to the local seasonal agricultural roots of the classic Saison.” Brewer Owen Johnston
I haven’t had the opportunity to try this beer yet so I am going to be there for the release. I’m not sure how many kegs there are so you should probably get down there too. Despite being kicked out of their MONA gallery in Hobart and trying to hold a grudge I can’t help liking their beers. Brewer Owen is a great guy and has a pretty good philosophy when it comes to making beer. The other reason you need to be there is the rumour going around. Apparently the bar that knocks their keg os Saison over first gets a special treat. Word has it that this treat will be a keg of Harvest Ale from Moo. This is just a rumour and entirely unconfirmed but do you want to miss the opportunity to get your hands on some of the Moo Harvest Ale? Didn’t think so.
Festivities kick off at 1700 on Wednesday the 4th of May at the Wheaty. Get There!
