Lobethal = Win

Lobethal Beer

Lobethal Bierhaus has scooped the pool at the Royal Adelaide Beer Show. Lobethal Bierhaus has taken out ten trophies at the awards ceremony on Friday night. A number of other local breweries also did well including a Champion ale for the GTS from Brewboys. Nobody came close to the sweep from Alistair at Lobethal though. Check out the article on Adelaide Now for some good mainstream press for craft beer.

So if you ever needed an excuse to get up to Lobethal and try their beers or drop in again to remind yourself how good it is you now have a good excuse. Go and see some other local breweries too. Get There!

Vale Ale in the News

Vale Ale Bike

A new article is up today in the mainstream media bout McLaren Vale Brewing Company. This one is in the Advertiser and on the Adelaide Now web site. It’s a nice piece about the company in general and what is happening with them in the future. These guys have got the marketing right and are doing all the right things with it.

The good news for beer lovers is that their brewery goes in real soon which should allow them to increase their range and volume of beer. Head brewer Jeff Wright hinted about plans for some new beers that sound great. We are just going to have to wait until the new brewery is commissioned and producing before we get to try them. They also have big plans for beer dinners and many other events down at the Salopian Inn to be hosted by their excellent chef Billy Doht and Head Brewer Jeff Wright. Their next dinner is on 9 March. I’m not sure if there are any tickets left but check their web site or give the Salopian a call. Keep an eye out as they have plans for more dinners in the near future.

If you really want to keep up with everything that is going on down there follow @__jeffwright, @mvbeer, @salopianinn and of course @hereforthehops on twitter.

Best Beers in Australia and New Zealand

It's Mayhem

Best beers from New Zealand and Australia.

Well I didn’t think a lot of the last poll that came out about the best craft beers in Australia. A new one has been published by Rate Beer listing the best beers from Australia and New Zealand. Whilst there are a few beers in there I am not a fan of this is a great list of good New Zealand and Australian beers. I guess I am disappointed it is dominated by New Zealand beer it does reflect the current climate of beer in this region. The beers out of New Zealand in recent times have been amazing with the top two beers on the list being prime examples. I’m drinking and Epic Armageddon as I write this article.

This is a much more accurate reflection of the beer scene in our region than the popularity poll published recently. These are beers that have been rated by beer geeks all over the world. It would seem to me and I’m sure anyone who loves beer would agree that it is a much better reflection of great beers than the other poll. This poll, while not setting out to, also reflects achievements by real craft brewers much better. This is a much more objective poll as it is based on rating of beer by consumers and not people specifically voting for a poll. Interesting how many beers, particularly top ten beers, from the other poll are missing from the results of this one. Believe the people who actually drink it and care about more than the people spurred on by marketing to vote for it.

Beard and Brau in the News

Beard and Brau Logo

Another local paper in Adelaide doing an article on a local microbrewery. This time it’s Beard and Brau. Run by a couple from Prospect in a Brewery in Para Hills.

I haven’t met these guys yet but they sound like a couple of really passionate beer people. The beers of theirs I have had have all been excellent. Once again the article is nothing hard hitting but it is good to see the mainstream press covering small breweries. If you can head on over to the article and leave a comment there. If they know people care about this sort of thing they may promote it more.

Make sure you hunt out their beers too. It’s great to support a small local business and it’s even better when the product is awesome.

McLaren Vale Beer Company in the Press

Came across this article from The Southern Times Messenger about the McLaren Vale Beer Company. It’s a bit of a puff piece in a small paper but it’s great to see any type of mainstream media covering craft beer. It can only help the cause of brewers and beer geeks.

I’m looking forward to getting down and checking out the restaurant and the beer. Have been to the Salopian years ago and it was a great restaurant. I haven’t had the beer for some time so can’t comment on it but really look forward to checking it out accompanied by some great food made with great McLaren Vale produce. The concept of the restaurant brewery is a great one. I’m guessing it may have been inspire by what Hargreaves Hill is doing with their restaurant in Yarra Glenn Victoria. I have eaten there and had one of the best steaks it has been my great fortune to eat. If they do anything like that it will be sensational.

Planning to head down in a couple of weeks. Would like to get down sooner but the day job is taking me to Sydney for a week and a half.
