Doctor’s Orders Brewing Iron Lung

It’s being released all over the place very soon now. However, the first Adelaide tapping, that I’m aware of, is this Wednesday the 22nd of March at The Wheaty from 1700. If the Doctor’s past efforts are anything to go by this is certain to be an absolute cracker. It is coming up at The Lion too and as soon as I know when it will be tapped there I will be sure to let you know.

The beer this time is what the good Doctor is calling a Black Imperial Pilsner. Labelled a lager interpretation of the Mind Warp Black IPA. I have had the Mind Warp and it was sensational. Doc did a black IPA long before everyone jumped on the bandwagon and it got really trendy. It is up there with the best black IPA I have tried too. You won’t want to miss it’s lager version. I’m certainly not going to.

What could you possibly have to do that would keep you away? Get There!

A New Beer Venue in Town?

Preahcher

Last Friday I went along to a lunch and tasting panel at The Highway Hotel. Not the first place you think of when you think of a good beer selection and of making an effort to be a great beer venue. I can say it was a fantastic surprise to find some great beers already available. Even better was meeting the staff that are really keen to take it even further and get serious about a great beer selection.

They are taking the first steps at the moment but getting a group of beer geeks in to talk about beer is a great sign. It would be pretty easy to just put whatever the local rep tries to sell you into the fridge or onto the tap. Currently the tap selection isn’t too exciting but there was a James Squire pale ale and The Mad Brewers Stout Noir pouring. Things get more interesting in bottle with a wider range of locals and a couple of Brew Dog’s to spice things up a bit. It’s a good start and I think a sign of things to come. If good beer isn’t enough for you the food is great too. Certainly a cut above the average pub food. I had a great piece of salmon after a mixed entree including some fantastic pork belly.

So get down and check out The Highway. The more people that ask for good beer the more good beer we will see them serving. They seem genuine about getting a great range of beer going and are just a good bunch of guys.

Crown & Sceptre

Sceptre Bar

The Bar at the Scepter courtesy of http://www.sceptre.com.au/

Adelaide now has a new option for good craft beer. The Crown and Sceptre has hooked up with some of Australia’s best breweries and has a range of great beers available. They have pulled out a lot of stops and really jumped into it too. They have a great range of beer from the likes of Murray’s, Bridge Road Brewers, Stone & Wood and 8Wired from NZ. They aren’t dipping their toe when it comes to breweries or styles. On a recent visit I had an Icon 2IPA from Murray’s, a Chestnut Pilsener from Bridge Road Brewers and an Organic Ale from Mike’s. That is an amazing line up for a bar just getting into good beer. Have a look at the beer list on their web site for the full line up. I’m certain you will be impressed.

You really should go for the beer but there are other reasons to visit too. I visited for lunch recently and the food was great. They have specials going all week so if you are working in the city it’s a great spot for lunch and maybe a beer or two at lunchtime. Then you can head back down for after work drinks and it will still take you many visits to work through that beer list. On top of the food there is regular live music and DJs, check the gigs page for details. The Sceptre is just a cool venue. For those of you that live and or work in the city it’s a great spot and they are making a real commitment to good beer which is a rare thing within the cbd and the whole of Adelaide for that matter. Get down there and have a beer.

If they do get the support from beer drinkers we may even get them to add a tap or two of good beer. When you go in pick up a good beer and ask when the taps are coming. They are doing a great job but more people will give great beer a try if they know it is there. Get There!

Check Out the Crown and Sceptre

Heart of Darkness

It appears we have a new beer venue in town. Well it’s not a new venue. The Crown and Sceptre has been around for ages serving cocktails, high end spirits and wine. However, they have just taken the leap into serving great beer. Check out this recent tweet and have a look at their new beer menu. It has me ready to run down there for a beer or two. I plan on doing just that in the next couple of days. Has been a while since I was there so will be able to give a better update on what it’s like then.

Focusing on the beer. They have beers from Murray’s, Bridge Road Brewers and 8Wired. This is some of the best beers being produced in Australia and New Zealand right now. Though it does pain me to admit it the New Zealanders are doing a fantastic job. If you wanted to start with trying one beer from each brewery to start with, but lets face it you should try them all I will give you a quick run down of my picks. From 8Wired my pick is the Hop Wired IPA. This beer has entered my all time favourite list and is truly stunning. Nice dry finish great smack of hops and a good strong bitterness without being harsh. It’s just sensational. From Bridge Road Brewers my pick is the Bling IPA, though I haven’t tried the Chestnut pilsner yet which sounds very interesting. The Bling is a great IPA with a huge whack of hoppy goodness backed up by a strong malt backbone so there is something for everybody. From Murray’s I can’t go past The Icon 2IPA. Seeing a theme here? The dark night porter is also an amazing beer but you just can’t go past the Icon. One of Australia’s great beers and one of the first double IPA’s made here. In the immortal words of Ford Prefect “Your mouth will love you for the rest of your life”.

Check out all of these guys on Twitter too @thesceptre, @8wiredbrewing, @NakedNed and @murraysbrewing. So get down to The Sceptre and support a venue that is supporting good beer. With their great all round drinks menus there has to be something for everyone here. Will give a fuller report once I have visited in the next couple of days. Get There!

Brewing in the Big Shed

Corner

A new brewery is starting up in Adelaide. It’s run by three local guys who are passionate about beer and very keen on their brewing. I was lucky enough to catch up with the guys the other night and have a bit of a chat about what they are up to.

I’m going to turn this into a series of articles over at Brews News. First article should be up soon. The guys are in the first stages so I’m going to be following their march toward their first release. I’m hoping for it to be an interesting journey. In the meantime follow the guys on twitter at @bigshedbeer. I will post here when the articles start going up at Brews News.
