Loads of Good Stuff at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
![]() |
There is so much new and exciting stuff in at The Wheaty right now. It is a very exciting time for the Adelaide craft beer lover. We are seeing a nice influx of beer from the USA and some new and interesting beer from our European friends too. The above is a small selection of what is available that picked up on my most recent visit. Mine includes goodies from Victory, Moylan’s, Schmalz and Amager. There are many more besides too. Far too many to list.
Keep checking the web site though. The bottled beer list should be going up on the site in pdf form in the very near future. You can find it on the bar now in dead tree form. Much easier to browse than the old folder. This is happening more regularly and I think it’s a great thing. It feels like there is something new on tap or in bottle every week. It sure is a great time to be a beer lover and it’s always a good time to be at The Wheaty for a beer. Get There!
This Week at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
While I can’t go into detail as it hasn’t been announced yet it’s a good week to be in Adelaide, at The Wheaty and drinking beer. There are some exciting new Australian and New Zealand beers hitting the taps this week that you really won’t want to miss. Right now you can head down and find the Mountain Goat Coffee IPA on tap. There are very few kegs of this beer around so I would get down soon if I were you. Also on tap at the moment is the Black Noir Saison from Bridge Road Brewers. This is the second black saison we have seen in recent times and it’s a good one.
There is plenty more good stuff coming up this week too. You are going to need to follow @TheWheaty on Twitter and subscribe to their email to get the details. Make sure you keep a close eye for the details. Over the next week there will be a couple of new IPAs from Bridge Road Brewers hitting the taps. Two single hop IPAs, one made with Galaxy hops and the other with the new Stella variety. The Galaxy has been released in the past but it’s the first time for the Stella. The Galaxy is an excellent beer that I have had the last time it was made and I got to try the most recent release in Melbourne last week. You don’t want to miss it.
The other big release coming up some time this week is Super Conductor by 8 Wired. This is their new keg only double IPA. According to the web site this has 80% more hops than the Hopwired IPA. The Hopwired is a great beer so I can’t wait to try the Super Conductor. All reports are that it is an amazing beer and that there isn’t much of it around so you will want to get to The Wheaty to try it. You need to keep your eye on @TheWheaty on Twitter and their mailing list. Get There!
Yeastie Boys at The Wheaty / Wheatsheaf Hotel
We have had it in bottle for a while and it has been one of my personal favourites. Now we are getting it on tap. Yep it’s the very awesome Pot Kettle Black from Yeastie Boys on tap from the Friday at The Wheaty. It should be going on about 1700 this Friday and I recommend that you don’t miss it. If the bottled product is anything to go by it is going to be amazing from the tap. Also coming up over then next month on tap there are plenty more interesting beers. From Yeastie Boys the Hu-da-wa, and 100% peat malt Rex Attitude will be making appearances.
Over the month the Yeastie Boys will be joined by some other breweries from across the Tasman. 8Wired and Tuatara will be returning to the taps with their Tall Poppy and APA respectively. For something a little closer to home a pallet of kegs is on it’s way from Bridge Road Brewers.
A bunch of new bottles are coming too. The most exciting of which is the first batch of Sierra Nevada beers to be legitimately imported into the country. All the SN beers imported to this country in the past have been grey imports and may not have been treated as they should be. These should be fresh and tasting great. Also coming is beers from Invercargill, Renaissance and Murray’s so there is plenty to look forward to.
Do yourself a favour and get down to the Wheaty.
Check Out the Crown and Sceptre
It appears we have a new beer venue in town. Well it’s not a new venue. The Crown and Sceptre has been around for ages serving cocktails, high end spirits and wine. However, they have just taken the leap into serving great beer. Check out this recent tweet and have a look at their new beer menu. It has me ready to run down there for a beer or two. I plan on doing just that in the next couple of days. Has been a while since I was there so will be able to give a better update on what it’s like then.
Focusing on the beer. They have beers from Murray’s, Bridge Road Brewers and 8Wired. This is some of the best beers being produced in Australia and New Zealand right now. Though it does pain me to admit it the New Zealanders are doing a fantastic job. If you wanted to start with trying one beer from each brewery to start with, but lets face it you should try them all I will give you a quick run down of my picks. From 8Wired my pick is the Hop Wired IPA. This beer has entered my all time favourite list and is truly stunning. Nice dry finish great smack of hops and a good strong bitterness without being harsh. It’s just sensational. From Bridge Road Brewers my pick is the Bling IPA, though I haven’t tried the Chestnut pilsner yet which sounds very interesting. The Bling is a great IPA with a huge whack of hoppy goodness backed up by a strong malt backbone so there is something for everybody. From Murray’s I can’t go past The Icon 2IPA. Seeing a theme here? The dark night porter is also an amazing beer but you just can’t go past the Icon. One of Australia’s great beers and one of the first double IPA’s made here. In the immortal words of Ford Prefect “Your mouth will love you for the rest of your life”.
Check out all of these guys on Twitter too @thesceptre, @8wiredbrewing, @NakedNed and @murraysbrewing. So get down to The Sceptre and support a venue that is supporting good beer. With their great all round drinks menus there has to be something for everyone here. Will give a fuller report once I have visited in the next couple of days. Get There!
Lots of Good Stuff at The Wheaty, Wheatsheaf Hotel
It’s that time of year when we all drink and eat too much but often the beer we are drinking isn’t that great. However for those of us in Adelaide the Wheaty(Wheatsheaf Hotel) has us sorted for a great range of beers at the moment including specialty six packs for that special beer geek in your life.
The Epic Armageddon IPA is back and stock and it’s as tasty as ever. The beers coming out of NZ at the moment are just amazing and this is one of the best. The availability of this beer has been patchy in recent times so you should get down and get some as soon as you can. If you can’t make it to The Wheaty Adelaide Bier Shop has it in stock too. Like all Epic beers it has that great sharp lingering bitterness. Another beer you have to try before it sells out it the 8Wired Hopwired IPA. This is one of the best new beers you will try for a long time. Every time I drink it I am amazed by how good it is. I rate this up with the best IPAs I have ever had and I have had a few. This one is also available at Adelaide Bier Shop so if you are outside Adelaide or just don’t want to leave the house they can sort you out. The other NZ beer available at the moment that you have to try is the Tuatara APA. A real whack of hops that fills the whole pallet. It may be too late to get your hands on this as it was selling fast but get to The Wheaty to see if they have any left.
There are also a bunch of the Rogue beers back in stock and numerous other interesting beers to try. There are even some growlers of Rogue beers available but in very limited quantities. Get There!
