Lots of Good Stuff at The Wheaty, Wheatsheaf Hotel
It’s that time of year when we all drink and eat too much but often the beer we are drinking isn’t that great. However for those of us in Adelaide the Wheaty(Wheatsheaf Hotel) has us sorted for a great range of beers at the moment including specialty six packs for that special beer geek in your life.
The Epic Armageddon IPA is back and stock and it’s as tasty as ever. The beers coming out of NZ at the moment are just amazing and this is one of the best. The availability of this beer has been patchy in recent times so you should get down and get some as soon as you can. If you can’t make it to The Wheaty Adelaide Bier Shop has it in stock too. Like all Epic beers it has that great sharp lingering bitterness. Another beer you have to try before it sells out it the 8Wired Hopwired IPA. This is one of the best new beers you will try for a long time. Every time I drink it I am amazed by how good it is. I rate this up with the best IPAs I have ever had and I have had a few. This one is also available at Adelaide Bier Shop so if you are outside Adelaide or just don’t want to leave the house they can sort you out. The other NZ beer available at the moment that you have to try is the Tuatara APA. A real whack of hops that fills the whole pallet. It may be too late to get your hands on this as it was selling fast but get to The Wheaty to see if they have any left.
There are also a bunch of the Rogue beers back in stock and numerous other interesting beers to try. There are even some growlers of Rogue beers available but in very limited quantities. Get There!

A Visit to Brisbane’s Platform Bar
My day job took me to Brisbane for a night and as luck would have it I was staying just around the corner from The Platform Bar. From all reports this is the best beer bar in town so that was where I headed as soon as I got done with the day job.
It looks very small at first but there is a pretty good area with tables and couches around behind the bar. It’s a fairly small bar but they have about eight beers on tap and a pretty decent bottle selection. Because of the small size, I assume, there is no seating at the bar. I’m a fan of sitting at the bar in a beer place and striking up conversations with other beer geeks and talking to people who don’t know their beer so well. Beer people tend to be a talkative crowd and having a bar to sit around certainly helps conversation.
The night I was there was pretty quiet and I was with some work colleagues so I didn’t get the chance to really chat with the staff or any locals. The staff were friendly but I didn’t get a chance to test their beer knowledge. I got stuck into some Rogue and Bridge Road beers and even got my colleagues to try the Rogue Juniper Pale Ale which was quite a big deal for someone used to drinking Carlton Draught. We were going to head to Scales and Ales for dinner but time wore an and we decided to eat at Platform too. The prices are great and the bar style meals we had were pretty good. I didn’t have the steak but am told it was pretty good for only $18 in the middle of a capital city.
In summary they have great beer, good food and a really great place. Sitting out the back reclined in the leather sofas drinking good beer is something I probably could have done all night. Unfortunately they closed and I had to leave. If you are going to Brisbane or if you are in Brisbane you really should check out Platform Bar. Get There!

You Need to be at The Wheaty on Friday
From 1600 this Friday at The Wheaty there are a bunch of new beers available. In bottles are a bunch of Rogue’s including the not before seen locally Jon Jon and Double Mocha Porter. Also never before seen locally are beers from Anderson Valley. I have had Anderson Valley beers in the USA and can assure you they are awesome. I know they have at least two IPAs from Anderson Valley so I will be happy.
There are also a bunch of Rogue’s available on tap. For the first time we see Captain Sig’s Northwestern ale on tap. Was a great beer from a bottle so I can only imagine it will be great from the tap. Also on tap on Friday in Chocolate Stout. There are bunch of other kegs but as usual it’s two at a time. I know I’m going to be there. If you like beer you should be too. Get There!

Take Home a Keg of Rogue
I was at the Wheaty have a quiet Mikkeller or three on the public holiday Monday afternoon. The Mikkeller was tasting great off tap. The pick of them is the Beer Geek Breakfast for my taste. It’s so rich and has fantastic deep flavours. Rick chocolate flavours from the malt mix with smoke and coffee added to the beer. The bitterness is just right to make it drinkable without getting in the way of the other flavours.
The other beers on tap when I was there was the single hop Simcoe, Amarillo and the Stateside IPA. The Simcoe is still the pick here for my taste but the Amarillo is no slouch either and the Stateside is awesome fresh off a tap. I even got to have a look at the unusual Mikkeller kegs while I was there. They are a wine cask like bladder inside a PET bottle. This is then mounted in a cardboard box. A lot easier, cheaper and probably greener than shipping around large stainless kegs too. This also makes them a lot lighter and easier to manage for the staff.
Whilst sitting there enjoying my beers I was chatting to Jade behind the bar and she was telling me about the beers that are coming and various bits and pieces. Then she mentions they have 5l take home kegs of Rogue Yellow Snow IPA. She even brings one out so I can have a look at it. Well that was all she needed to do. I love Yellow Snow and the packing was awesome. As soon as I saw it I was sold. I have now planned a beer dinner around it.
These things aren’t cheap so you may not want to race down for one but they are cool and worth every cent in my opinion. I’m going to have to be lame and keep it around after it’s empty too, it just looks really cool.
I will likely add some more info about the Mikkeller beers soon. Don’t miss out though, the Tomahawk is already gone and I think the Simcoe is probably not far behind. Get there!

More Rogues
Popped into the Wheaty this afternoon. They currently have four Rogues on tap. Current lineup is Imperial Pilsener, Mocha Porter, 200m Ale and Triple Jump Ale. A nice surprise for a Sunday afternoon. Also available is the double hopped IPA from Lobethal and the Miller Lager from the Barossa Brewing Company.
Word is that it is going to be a week or so until the adapters turn up for the Mikkeller beers. I’m off to Sydney for work soon and am betting the adaptors turn up while I am away. Let me know how good it is if I miss it.
Plenty of great beer available at the moment though so get there and have a few.
